Trenchless Sewer Lining (CIPP)
Trenchless sewer lining (also called pipe relining or CIPP) repairs a damaged sewer line from the inside — no digging up your yard, driveway, or slab. A resin-saturated liner is inserted into the old pipe and cured in place, forming a smooth, seamless “pipe within a pipe.” In Orange County, most residential relining jobs run roughly $80–$250 per linear foot and finish in a single day.

What Is Trenchless Sewer Lining (CIPP)?
Trenchless sewer lining — the industry term is cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) — rehabilitates a cracked, leaking, or root-damaged sewer line without excavation. Instead of trenching to reach and replace the pipe, we access it through an existing cleanout, vent, or small entry point, then insert a flexible liner coated in epoxy resin. The liner is inflated against the old pipe walls and cured with hot water, steam, ambient air, or UV light. Once hardened, it becomes a jointless, corrosion-resistant new pipe bonded inside the old one.
Because there are no joints for roots to invade and no seams to leak, a relined pipe typically outlasts the original — with a smooth interior that actually improves flow. VIP installs Perma-Liner™ systems, backed by a manufacturer warranty.
Relining restores the pipe you have. Pipe bursting replaces it entirely. If your line is fully collapsed or badly offset, we’ll recommend bursting instead — see the comparison below.
Signs You Need Sewer or Drain Relining
Relining is the right fix when a pipe is damaged but still structurally traceable. Common signs Orange County homeowners see:
- Recurring backups or slow drains that keep returning after snaking — usually roots or a cracked section letting debris catch.
- Tree roots in the line (confirmed on a camera inspection) — a seamless liner seals the joints roots enter through.
- Sewer gas odor inside or around the property, pointing to a cracked or leaking pipe.
- Wet spots, sinkholes, or lush patches in the yard over the sewer path.
- Old clay or cast-iron pipe — common in Orange County’s older neighborhoods and prone to cracking, corrosion, and root intrusion.
- A failed real-estate or pre-purchase sewer inspection that flagged cracks, offsets, or corrosion.
The only way to know whether a pipe can be relined is a camera inspection — we always scope the line first.
Our Approach
Our Trenchless Relining Methods
Not every pipe needs the same solution. After camera-diagnosing the line, we match the relining method to the damage:
Full-Length CIPP Lining
A continuous liner runs the full length of the damaged run and cures into one seamless pipe. Best for lines with multiple cracks, root intrusion at several joints, or general age-related deterioration.
Sectional (Point) Repair
When damage is isolated to one section, we line only that segment — a faster, lower-cost fix that leaves the rest of the pipe untouched.
Lateral Lining & Reinstatement
For branch and lateral connections, we line the lateral and reopen service connections internally with robotic cutters — no digging to restore each junction.
Looking for a different trenchless method? If your pipe is collapsed or too far gone to line, pipe bursting replaces it without a full trench. For certain smaller-diameter and pressure lines, epoxy brush coating seals the interior. We’ll recommend the right one after a camera inspection.
Step By Step
The Trenchless Relining Process
- Access points are located. We use existing cleanouts, vent stacks, or fixture openings as entry and “pull” points — no need to open the pipe path.
- We camera-inspect the line. A sewer camera inspection pinpoints the exact location and extent of the damage.
- The line is cleaned. We hydro-jet or descale the pipe so the liner bonds to a clean surface — resin won’t adhere over grease or scale.
- The resin-coated liner is inserted. TThe liner is pulled into the damaged section through the access point.
- The liner is inflated and cured. It hardens against the old walls, forming a new jointless pipe inside the old one.
- A follow-up camera inspection verifies the repair. You get before-and-after video showing a smooth, seamless “pipe within a pipe.” Most residential jobs finish in a single day.
Pricing
How Much Does Trenchless Sewer Lining Cost in Orange County?
$80–$250 / linear foot
Your price depends on:
- Length and diameter of the line being relined
- Access — an existing cleanout keeps costs down; adding one raises them
- Severity and number of damaged sections (full-length liner vs. spot repair)
- Cleaning required first — heavy roots or scale add a jetting/descaling step
- Residential vs. commercial or multi-unit scope

How Long Does Trenchless Sewer Lining Last?
A properly installed CIPP liner is designed to last 50 years or more. Because the finished pipe is jointless and corrosion-resistant, it resists the two things that kill Orange County sewer lines fastest: tree-root intrusion at joints and corrosion in old clay and cast-iron pipe.

Why Orange County Sewer Lines Need Relining
- Aging clay & cast-iron laterals in older cities (Costa Mesa, Santa Ana, Orange, older Irvine villages).
- Mature trees sending roots toward pipe joints — a seamless liner removes the joints they exploit.
- Coastal corrosion near Huntington Beach and Newport Beach.
- Soil movement that stresses rigid old pipe over time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Trenchless sewer lining, or CIPP (cured-in-place pipe), repairs a damaged sewer line from the inside. A resin-coated liner is inserted through an existing access point and cured in place, forming a new seamless pipe inside the old one — with little or no digging.
Relining restores the pipe you already have by creating a new lining inside it — ideal for cracks, roots, and corrosion. Pipe bursting replaces the pipe entirely by pulling a new one through the old, and is used when a line is collapsed, badly offset, or too small. We recommend the right one after a camera inspection.
A properly installed CIPP liner is built to last 50 years or more. It’s jointless and corrosion-resistant, so it resists the root intrusion and corrosion that damage most Orange County sewer lines. VIP’s installs are backed by a Perma-Liner™ warranty.
Usually, yes. Relining itself may look similar in price per foot, but you avoid the cost of restoring landscaping, driveways, and concrete after a full excavation — which is where traditional dig-and-replace gets expensive.
Most cracked, corroded, or root-damaged pipes can be relined. Fully collapsed or severely offset pipes usually can’t — those are candidates for pipe bursting instead. A camera inspection tells us which method your line needs.
The liner is thin, and because the finished surface is smooth and seamless, relined pipes often flow better than the corroded, root-filled pipe they replaced.
Most residential relining jobs are completed in a single day, including the camera inspection and cleaning.
Always. Every job starts with a sewer camera inspection to confirm the damage and the right method, and ends with a follow-up video verifying the repair.
Yes. Trenchless lining is ideal for HOAs, multi-unit buildings, restaurants, and retail because it avoids shutting down parking lots and landscaping. Call us to scope a commercial or shared line.
